Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Vincent Okpala has hailed the contribution of Nigerian Association Resident Doctors (NARD), in healthcare service delivery in the country.

Dr Okpala said this during the NARDs 41st Ordinary General Meeting in Awka.

The commissioner noted that resident doctors were key to the healthcare service delivery in teaching institutions in the country, urging them to remain committed to efforts in saving lives.

“Some teaching institutions are owned Federal and some state government; we are privileged to have two of such; we have the state owned-Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka.

“Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi is owned by the Federal Government.

“This two facilities have resident doctor’s training and lots of resident doctor’s accredited programmes that will help to improve quality healthcare service delivery.’’

According to him, Gov. Willie Obiano’s administration has done a lot in ensuring that the healthcare centres are centres of excellence by virtue of teir accreditations.

They have in place, some state of the art facilities that actually measure up to the name.

“Looking at what happened in the hit of the COVID-19 pandemic; you will agree with me that the place was `a centre of excellence’ with respect to testing, diagnosis and treatment.

“So, that is the reason we do not joke with our resident doctors and by virtue of that you are aware that the welfare packages by the Government has been tied to making sure they enjoy good welfare,’’ he said.

In his lecture entitled: “Improving the Quality of Care; Role of Resident Doctors’’, the Commissioner extolled the contributions of healthcare providers in the fight against Coronavirus pandemic.

He explained that the pandemic provided a lot of opportunities for research and innovations that had repositioned the healthcare system for quality service delivery.

Dr Okpala urged them to remain focus and expand their field of knowledge and skills to meet emerging challenges in health One of the highlights of the event was the conferment of merit awards to the commissioner by NARD.
